Captain Ria reports from the pedal power front line

March 23, 2015 By Matthew Little

Pip, Pip,

I had an energetic week racing around the country with Doctor Matt Little and his crazy pedal powered inventions. We traveled to five different offices with a pedal powered machine powering light bulbs and monitoring the amount of energy each person produced.

It was really great to see people getting on board with saving energy, increase their fitness level and battle to be the best.

It wasn’t all fun and games as our pedal power military characters had a serious message about turning off computer monitors when they are not being used, lights when there is no one in, walking, cycling or lift sharing the journey to work, every once in a while, instead of driving alone and only boiling the amount of water you needed in the kettle. All things we should already do but sometimes need that little extra reminder.

What better way to be reminded than a bit of healthy competition between offices? Office workers got to break up their day with a quick spurt of energy on one of Matt’s crazy inventions. They loosened their ties, rolled up their sleeves and peddled till sweat dripped off their brows. I was impressed with the amount of effort people put in and most of them pledged to think more about the amount of energy they are using and to endeavor to waste less. I’m not going to lie, I think the competitive element helped but we all know that it’s not about winning, it’s the taking part that counts…Ha! Who am I kidding, that’s what losers say!

Over and Out,

Captain Ria.

Pedal smoothie bike for London BikeHub

March 5, 2012 By admin

A year or so ago I was asked to build a pedal powered generator and pedal powered smoothie machine for London Bike Hub. Recently they asked me to build another smoothie bike for their events promoting cycling in London and beyond. This time I thought I’d take a few photos of it before I deliver it.
If you would like to build your own, I have created an instructable with details of making your own smoothie bike. My new version is a bit different as I now have access to a metal lathe.
If you would like to hire a pedal powered sound system or smoothie bike in the London area then drop London Bike Hub a line. Read on to see some photos of their new smoothie machine…

Pedal power cinema

December 26, 2010 By admin

RE-Innovation joined forces with Magnificent Revolution to increase the pedal power capacity of Bristol. Check out Magnificent Revolution’s website for more details.

This included a two-day workshop for a number of bicycle related community groups to produce four pedal power generators, a one-day public pedal power workshop and a two and a half hour pedal powered screening of Metropolis at the Cube cinema. This was organised with the help of Sprockets and Dust.
