I have run a number of solar photovoltaic and off-grid power hands-on workshops and I recently ran another solar PV workshop with EWB Sheffield.
Engineers Without Borders UK (EWB-UK) is a student run organisation trying to connect engineers with the field of international development. They do this through placements, training and outreach programs.
Here are the slides and handouts from the day, along with some photos. It was a great turn out with 21 participants who built 4 small solar PV systems, although it was dark by the end of the day which made it difficult to test them.
We also had a tour around the Sheffield Solar Farm, which is on the roof of the Hicks building. They are testing a variety of PV modules and systems there which was great to see.
The slides are available here:
The solar PV worksheet is available here:
For additional information and further reading I would recommend 'Off-the-grid' by Duncan Keridge et al and 'A Practical Guide to Solar Photovoltaic Systems for Technicians' by Jean-Paul Louineau.
Thanks to all who attended. I hope you had fun and I've given you a bit of inspiration to get off-grid. Here is a link to the event page, with loads of photos.
Testing various solar PV modules in a short window of sun.

Getting hands-on with solar and batteries.
Here the group was given a tour of the Sheffield Solar Farm. We also saw their data logging system and domestic energy storage tests.
